Roads. Spread all across the world, it connects people to places. But can it do more than just  taking us form one place to another ?
Well, what if i tell you that they could sing as well? Yes, you heard it right! Singing roads! Keep reading to learn about “Musical roads” and how Honda failed to make one!

Civic Musical Road, California

The Civic Musical Road was built on Avenue K in Lancaster, California, on 5 September 2008. Spreading across a quartermile road run between 60th and 70th street, the road has been designed by Honda (to basically show off their knowledge about cars),with multiple cuts and grooves to play “William Tell overture” which sounds something like this ( and continues midway to the song.)

But the idea didn’t quite work out as planned since now it sounds like this.

And to add to the joke, since the nearby residents were disturbed by this irritating sound, Honda removed this portion of the road and built it on another location in Lancesters, but with the same problems as the first one.

The science behind it

A Musical note, is a vibration in the air at a particular  frequency. This can be made by a instrument or a computer, or in this case by the grooves of the road. Now, we can calculate the distance between each groove with simple equations, and yes this is what Honda did what for the most part, but they forgot to calculate the width of the groove itself, causing the song to be so off tune, it basically sounds like a buzzer.

And if you want to look at the math and calculations behind this, here is the study  by David Simmons Duffin, a profound physicist at Caltech, who was likely to be the first person who noticed and studied the problem, and provided a legitimate reason why.

More examples

And well, the musical road in California maybe be a colossal failure( they spent a lot of money to built this road), other countries  like Denmark,France,Japan have done better, with their Musical roads actually sounding like they are supposed to. Here's  an example from Hungary.

Conclusion

Sound is important  because it can reveal information about person, setting, and era. Certain sounds and visual pairings can generate feelings that neither alone can, and because it can inform and move us in ways that images alone cannot. It can also greatly impact how we observe things.

So try to keep the volume of your earphones down, and try to stay away from excessively loud music, beauty of sound can’t be found in anything else.

(bit cringey, but it's true tho! :ps: this was cringy as well:()
